LANCE AMSR2 NRT DATA PRODUCTS FROM GCOM-W1

AMSR2  Worldview Image

NRT AMSR2 L2B Global Swath GSFC Profiling Algorithm 2010: Surface Precipitation, Wind Speed over Ocean, Water Vapor over Ocean and Cloud Liquid Water over Ocean

The GCOM-W1 AMSR2 Level-2B rain and ocean products include global precipitation and ocean parameters (not including Sea Surface Temperatures), calculated by the GPROF 2010V2 using resampled Tb (Level-1R) data provided by JAXA. Retrieved parameters include global total precipitation, global rainfall, total precipitable water (TPW), ocean wind speed (OWS), columnar cloud liquid water (CLW) over ocean, and columnar water vapor (CWV) over ocean.

Note: There are some “square holes” in the lower center of many of the RainOcean images. This is caused by erroneous sea ice values in the Reynolds Sea Ice product that is used to process the data. This problem will be resolved when the RainOcean algorithm is updated to GPROF2014, which uses the NOAA Autosnow product for land snow cover as well as sea ice.

NRT AMSR2 Daily L3 Global Snow Water Equivalent EASE-Grids

The GCOM-W1 AMSR2 Level-3 Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) data set contains snow water equivalent (SWE) data and quality assurance flags mapped to the Northern and Southern Hemisphere 25 km Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grids (EASE-Grids). As NRT Tb Level -1R data are received from JAXA throughout the day, partial daily products are generated and identified with a product maturity code of "P" in the filename. Once all Level-1R inputs are available, the complete daily product contains product maturity code "R" (near Real time) in the filename. Incremental processing makes data available to the user as it is received, rather than at the end of the day.

Note: JAXA's NRT L1R brightness temperature data are processed as they are received from the satellite once per orbit. Therefore, there may be extra or missing data at the beginning of the descending a half-orbit and at the end of the ascending half-orbit. Because the AMSR2 snow product is generated only from the descending passes, when data are missing at the beginning of the descending half-orbit, that data will be missing from the resulting snow product and corresponding imagery as well.

NRT AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 6.25 km Polar Gridded 89 GHz Brightness Temperatures V1

The GCOM-W1 NRT AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 6.25 km Polar Gridded 89 GHz Brightness Temperatures V1 dataset is created using resampled Tb (Level-1R) data provided by JAXA.  This Level-3 gridded product includes brightness temperatures at 89.0 GHz. Data are mapped to a polar stereographic grid at 6.25 km spatial resolution. This product is an intermediate product for processing of LANCE AMSR2 Level-3 sea ice products at 12.5 km and 25 km resolution. As NRT Tb Level-1R data are received from JAXA throughout the day, partial daily products are generated and identified with a product maturity code of "P" in the filename. Once all Level-1R inputs are available, the complete daily product contains product maturity code "R" (near Real time) in the filename. Incremental processing makes data available to the user as it is received, rather than at the end of the day. Data are stored in HDF-EOS5/netCDF-CF format. The Version 1 dataset uses the AMSR-U2 product generation algorithm with slight modifications for NRT product generation, same algorithm used to generation the standard, science quality, data that is available at the NSIDC DAAC.

The GCOM-W1 NRT AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 12.5 km Brightness Temperature & Sea Ice Concentration V1 dataset is created using resampled Tb (Level-1R) data provided by JAXA. This NRT AMSR2 Daily Level-3 gridded 12.5 km sea ice product includes brightness temperatures at 18.7 through 89.0 GHz and sea ice concentration. Data are mapped to a polar stereographic grid at 12.5 km spatial resolution. Sea ice concentration and brightness temperatures include daily ascending averages, daily descending averages, and daily averages. As NRT Tb Level -1R data are received from JAXA throughout the day, partial daily products are generated and identified with a product maturity code of "P" in the filename. Once all Level-1R inputs are available, the complete daily product contains product maturity code "R" (near Real time) in the filename. Incremental processing makes data available to the user as it is received, rather than at the end of the day. Data are stored in HDF-EOS5/netCDF-CF format. Data are mapped to a polar stereographic grid at 25 km spatial resolution. Sea ice concentration and brightness temperatures include daily ascending averages, daily descending averages, and daily averages.  As NRT Tb Level -1R data are received from JAXA throughout the day, partial daily products are generated and identified with a product maturity code of "P" in the filename. Once all Level-1R inputs are available, the complete daily product contains product maturity code "R" (near Real time) in the filename. NRT AMSR2 Unified L2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture Beta Version 2

The GCOM-W1 AMSR2 Unified Level-2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture product is a daily measurement of surface soil moisture produced by two retrieval algorithms, (Normalized Polarization Difference (NPD) algorithm developed by JPL and the Single Channel Algorithm (SCA) developed by USDA), using resampled NRT Level-1R data provided by JAXA. This is the same algorithm that generates the corresponding standard science products in the AMSR SIPS. With this beta release, we are generating NRT products in both HDF-EOS5 and netCDF/CF.

  • Version 2 corrects these issues from the previous release:
    • A boundary condition error that resulted in the failure of a small number of version 1 product files.
    • An error in the number of low resolution scans processed. This error caused only the first half of each scan to be processed.
